September means the end of summer and the start of a new school year. Normally, we’d be buying school supplies, getting the kids to bed early (or at least trying), making lunches and looking forward to a fresh start. Well, I don’t have to tell you that this year is monumentally different. Some of us are homeschooling (for the first time), some are distance learning, some are in school and others are a hybrid of school and home. It feels less like we’re diving back into a routine and more like the unknown, but if we embrace it and stay calm our kids will be less anxious and adapt. That’s our goal at Macaroni Kid. We’re adapting to give you all the local, virtual, home or a hybrid of fun to help you create memories for you and your family.

September 5 - Cheese Pizza Day
- The comedian Kevin James once said, “There’s no better feeling in the world than a warm pizza box on your lap.” It’s hard to argue with that. Celebrate this cheesy holiday with a pizza from your local restaurant or you can try making your own. We included some of the most diverse pizza recipes we could find so you can eat pizza for breakfast, lunch or dinner.
September 6 - Read a Book Day
- Reading is not just for kids you know. This is a perfect day to pick up a book and take some time for YOU. Reading not only transports you to another time and place, it also can improve your health. Reading improves your memory, increases your concentration and can reduce stress. Who wouldn’t want that! September 7 - Labor Day
- Always the first Monday in September, this holiday usually marks the end of summer. Initially, it was celebrated in a few states but it caught on and became a national holiday in 1894 often with parades honoring local trade and labor groups. You can read more HERE.
September 9 - Teddy Bear Day
- Many people know that the “Teddy Bear” was named after President Theodore Roosevelt but they have no idea why. In 1902, President Roosevelt refused to shoot a bear cub while hunting. He was a big game hunter but when the hunting party didn’t find any bears, his assistants tied one to a tree. This was very unsportsmanlike and President Roosevelt refused to shoot it. This became a big news event and after a cartoonist read about it in the newspaper, he created a cartoon that appeared in the Washington Post sparking a New York shop owner to create the “Teddy Bear”.
September 12 - National Video Games Day
- My kids love video games and this pandemic gave them plenty of time to become experts. At first I was concerned but since I started playing video games WITH my kids I realized there are some really great, fun choices. September 13 - Grandparent’s Day
- Grandparents are the best! They shower your kids with love, kindness and wisdom and should be celebrated every day (my mom made me write that). September 15 - Make a Hat Day
- According to historyofhats.net:
- The white tall chef hat traditionally has 100 pleats. This represents hundreds of ways an egg can be prepared.
- The process of making felt used to be highly toxic. They used mercury which caused damage to the nervous system, tremors and dementia. This is where the phrase “Mad as a hatter” comes from.
- The panama hat was not made in Panama but in Ecuador.
- Vikings never wore horned helmets.
- Color of construction hard hats have meanings:
- White hard hats are worn by supervisors or engineers.
- Blue hard hats are worn by technical advisers.
- Green hard hats are worn by safety inspectors.
- Yellow hard hats are worn by laborers.
- Orange or pink hard hats are worn by new workers or visitors.
- Celebrate by making your own hat. Yarn, felt, paper, fabric are all good choices. You can hot glue rhinestones or other decorations on it and have a hat contest to see who can create the funniest, tallest, craziest hat. If you want to create one that you can wear outside the home, it’s a great day to learn to knit or crochet a hat and it’s even Good For Your Brain.
September 16 - Collects Rock Day
- During the 1970’s, one of the most popular toys was a pet rock. Luckily, kids stopped naming them and started using them to inspire and uplift people. We have plenty of ways to collect rocks and use them for good.
