Lafayette High Student Named State Student of the Year Finalist

Lafayette High School senior Walker Prejean has been named a Louisiana State Student of the Year Finalist, a prestigious honor recognizing academic excellence, leadership, and community impact.

The Louisiana Department of Education will formally recognize all finalists and announce the 2025 State Students of the Year at the Student of the Year Award Ceremony on Friday, May 16, at 12:30 PM at The Cook Hotel and Conference Center on the LSU campus.

Superintendent Francis Touchet, Jr. shared his admiration for Walker’s achievement, saying:

“We couldn’t be prouder of Walker Prejean! His dedication, leadership, and passion for making a difference truly set him apart. This is a huge achievement, and we can’t wait to see all the great things he’ll accomplish next!”

About Walker Prejean

Walker Prejean is a standout student at Lafayette High School, known for his impressive academic achievements, leadership, and commitment to civic engagement. Maintaining a 4.33 GPA, earning eight Advanced Placement credits, and achieving a perfect 36 on the ACT, Walker embodies academic excellence.

His passion for leadership and policy development has led him to prominent roles in youth organizations. His involvement in Youth and Government sparked a deep interest in the intersection of environmental issues and political policy. Walker serves as an officer for the State Legislative Youth Advisory Council, contributes as a researcher for Ballotpedia, and actively works to advance mental health awareness as a member of the State Youth Legislative Mental Health Committee.

With aspirations of pursuing a legal career and engaging in politics, Walker is dedicated to making a lasting impact by combining his academic expertise, civic leadership, and passion for meaningful societal change.

The Louisiana Student of the Year program recognizes the most accomplished students across the state, highlighting their achievements in academics, leadership, and community service. The competition selects finalists at the elementary, middle, and high school levels, with one student from each category earning the title of Louisiana Student of the Year.
