About the Artist and Poster:

As an artist, Megan Barra specializes in design related to the arts, music, and culture of South Louisiana. Her work can be seen on posters for festivals and cultural events, books for fellow artists, and music packaging for Louisiana musicians. Barra’s design for Sonny Landreth’s CD Levee Town was nominated for a Grammy Award in the “Best Recording Package” category. Her fine artwork, “Silk Compositions,” has been exhibited in galleries and museums in South Louisiana, Quebec, and France.

Commemorating the 50th anniversary of Festivals Acadiens et Créoles, Megan Barra’s design for this year’s poster depicts a triple-row accordion adorned with masters of Cajun and Creole music that performed at the first event in 1974. Across the bellows from them are the faces of tomorrow’s players who will preserve, carry on, and create new music rooted in the tradition. Underneath live oak trees, symbolic of the living process, the accordion rests on a bandana embellished with musical instruments, dance, cuisine, and craft motifs. The overall design reimagines an Art Nouveau-style poster that emerged at the turn of the 20th century and saw a revival in concert posters of the 1970s.

Artist Quote: “I am honored to design the poster to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Festivals Acadiens et Créoles. Poster design is a passion of mine, and I have been to every festival since 1976. The music, dance, cuisine, and craft have enriched our lives here in Lafayette. So, I am excited to share my joy for the festival through my design. The stylized trees and acorns are metaphors for growth and the living process. Illustrated musicians, both past and future, old and young, articulate songs and stories. A bandana design embellished with musical instruments, dance, cuisine, and craft motifs serves as a backdrop.”
