THE LEGACY OF BROUSSARDS AND THE CARRIERES:

The Lawtell Playboys that many of us remember were based around the musical partnership of Calvin Carrière on fiddle and Delton Broussard on accordion. But they were the heirs of Eraste "Dolon" Carrière and Joseph "Bébé" Carrière who came before them. Their style is representative of what was called "lala," popular in Creole communities before and then alongside zydeco. The St. Landry Parish based Carrière family produced quite a few other well-known and influential musicians in the emerging zydeco genre, including Roy Carrière, a second-generation zydeco master who learned from that genre's creators, including the Chenier brothers, but also from "lala" masters, including the Broussards and the Ardoins. He and his Night Rockers band were an important link between zydeco's origins and contemporary styles. The Broussards and Carrières have influenced both branches of Creole music. Joining us to celebrate these family traditions are Delton's son Jeffrey Broussard and Roy's son Chubby Carrier, as well as Cedric Watson. Jeffrey played with his father's Lawtell Playboys before launching two of his own iconic Creole bands, Zydeco Force and the Creole Cowboys. Chubby played with his father before launching his own Bayou Swamp Band, with whom he recently won a Grammy. Cedric moved to Louisiana from his native East Texas to participate in this area's Creole and Cajun music scene. He has studied the styles of most of the major stylists, including the Broussards and the Carrières, as reflected in the music of his own Bijou Créole band.
