Bonjour!
When the Folk Roots Kids Camp was launched a dozen+ years ago, it became an immediate success! Many of the campers who picked up the traditional Cajun & Creole musical instruments, songs, and dances at Kids Camp years ago are now young adults carrying their unique Louisiana French heritage music, crafts, and culinary skills into this decade. Some of those alumni will also be returning as Counselors in Training (CITs) and co-instructors for 2022 working along with the professional Kids Camp staff!
Following the pause of in-person programs during 2020-2021, Folk Roots is excited to offer TWO locations for Kids Camps this summer: Le Vieux Village in Opelousas, and Vermilionville in Lafayette. Kids can attend either camp or both!
The amazing team of fun and friendly professional musicians and instructors hail from across south Louisiana. We are honored that these cultural ambassadors are taking a break from their touring bands, schools, and studios to share their knowledge and skills with Folk Roots Kids Campers this year. The team of accordion, fiddle, guitar, percussion, vocal, dance, and cultural activity leaders will include Christine Balfa, Brazus Huval, Chad Huval, Kelly Jones, Caleb Ledet, Amelia Powell, Sarah Savoy, Wayne Singleton, and other friends of Folk Roots.
While music is the foundation for Folk Roots Kids Camps, each location for 2022 offers unique activities and opportunities. Both sites will explore nature and folklife of our Atchafalaya region, do arts and science projects, compete in scavenger hunts, play indoor and outdoor games, and enjoy healthy foods and snacks. Both sites will also have a final day of camp "mini-concert" backed by the instructors, and a family-student "dance" to close the day. In Opelousas, the campers will even have a chance to perform again at the historic Delta Grand Theater on Friday evening, June 17th, opening for Wayne Singleton & Same Ol' 2-Step. And in Lafayette, the campers will have a chance to be on stage again at the Hideaway on Lee on Friday evening, June 10th. How cool is that for the parents and grandparents in the audience!?
More than ever, Louisiana Folk Roots is committed to diversity, equity, inclusiveness and access in our programming as we relaunch in 2022. To further support parents and students, a small number of partial scholarships will be offered to select applicants. The application will be released in late April on lafolkroots.org and Facebook.
