September is Library Card Sign-up Month!

Your Child Has A Library Card

September 23, 2021

September is Library Card Sign-up Month, a time when the Lafayette Public Library joins the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries nationwide to remind parents, caregivers, and students that signing up for a library card is the first step on the path to academic achievement and lifelong learning.
Libraries offer everything from early literacy programs to virtual homework help and GED classes, helping transform lives, and communities through education. At the Lafayette Public Library, you’ll find a wide variety of educational resources and activities, including Homework Louisiana, LearningExpress Library, Adventure Kits, and so much more!

Since 1987, Library Card Sign-up Month has been held each September to mark the beginning of the school year. During the month, the ALA and libraries work together in a national effort to ensure every child signs up for his or her own library card.

The Library has teamed up once more with the Lafayette Parish School System to provide your child with a free Student ID-Public Library Card. This program automatically enrolls more than 32,000 Lafayette Parish public school students into the library system. Students may use their Student ID number as a public library card to check out materials, book study rooms, and access online services and databases.

This year, Marley Dias, founder of #1000BlackGirlBooks, author and executive producer, was selected as honorary chair of the American Library Association’s (ALA) Library Card Sign-Up Month. In her new role, Dias will promote the value of libraries and encourage everyone to get their very own library card.

The Lafayette Public Library is very excited to announce the addition of a limited-edition library card for 2021. Beginning September 1, the Lafayette Public Library will offer a limited-edition library art card featuring “Book Monster” by local award-winning writer and artist Kody Chamberlain.

With over twenty years’ experience in the entertainment arts, Chamberlain has collaborated as a writer and story artist with industry titans such as DC Comics, Fox, HALO, Image Comics, Marvel Comics, MTV, NBCUniversal, Sony, and WarnerBros. Recently, his illustration work was featured in a five-minute segment for NBCUniversal’s Oscar coverage for the 91st Academy Awards.

For more information about how to sign up for a library card, visit any of the nine branches of the Lafayette Public Library in person or online at lafayettepubliclibrary.org.

Please Note: Beginning Wednesday, September 1, South Regional and Main Libraries will have new hours. They will be Monday – Thursday, 9:00 am – 8:00 pm and Friday, 9:00 am – 6:00 pm. Weekend hours will remain the same. Visit lafayettepubliclibrary.org/hours for details.
