September Is Childhood Obesity Awareness Month

By The Healthy Acadiana Team September 9, 2021

Our state has one of the highest rates of childhood obesity in the country. In the 2016–17 National Survey of Children’s Health, 19.1 percent of Louisiana children ages 10 to 17 were obese, much higher than the national average of 15.8 percent.

September is National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month, and we are focused on highlighting childhood obesity in our community. Through nutritional education and an emphasis on physical fitness, we can help prevent destructive diseases affecting our community, including diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The National Survey on Children's Health provides rich data on multiple, intersecting aspects of children’s lives - check it out!

There is no simple answer to this problem, but working together to make a change is a good start. Here are some tips to help children maintain a healthy weight, from the CDC.
