Cheers to the first full week of school being almost complete for everyone. If your family is anything like mine, I am sure many of your kids are actively playing sports or planning on playing sports in the upcoming year. And, if you happen to have an accident-prone child like mine, I am sure strains, sprains, and the occasional fracture are not out of the question! Two years ago, prior to ever setting foot on the football field, my youngest son managed to break his wrist during his warm-up for the first game.
As a nurse practitioner who was actively practicing in the emergency department, my first instinct was to load him up and head to the emergency room. However, his athletic director at the time mentioned Orthopedic Urgent Care which is staffed by providers who specialize in orthopedic complaints. This was one of the best experiences I have had with a medical provider. Check-in was quick and easy, we were seen fairly quickly, x-rays were done on site, the fracture was diagnosed, a splint was applied, and a referral to see an orthopedic physician was made for the next day (only because the injury required surgery). I think, in total, we were there an hour and thirty minutes from check-in to discharge…no complaints here!
Now more than ever, the convenience of an orthopedic urgent care stands out. With the current wave of COVID-19’s Delta variant, urgent care facilities and emergency departments throughout our area are swamped and wait times can exceed 6 hours if not more. My suggestion is if your child, or even you have an orthopedic issue, consider utilizing this hidden gem to avoid lengthy wait times and unnecessary risk of exposure to illness. Orthopedic Urgent Care is located at 4231 Ambassador Caffery next to Chipotle.They are open Monday through Friday 8 am to 8 pm and Saturday 9 am to 6 pm with no appointment necessary.
