As we slowly transition out of a period of burnout, we've been focusing on a few books. We recently acquired the Smithsonian Handbook of Interesting Insects and each day we read about a different insect. The pictures are beautiful and detailed and the descriptions are very informative but not so long as to lose a child's attention. I have several bugs in resin so we like to pass them around when one of them is read about. We also have a big book of bugs by Usborne full of pictures and we look some up in there and pass that book around.
I found another book titled Simple Machines The Way They Work, a physics book for kids, and my 12yo son has been especially interested in it. It describes and shows diagrams of types of pulleys, the inclined plane, the wedge, the screw, levers, and much more. The book contains lots of examples of common items in the world around us, like slides and seesaws. We followed our reading by going to the park to use these simple machines.
Finally, we read about Marian Anderson called Maria Sings. The book is about her struggles as a singer in the U.S. while being very popular in Europe and finally being invited to sing at Constitution Hall after being rejected based on her skin color. We look forward to learning more and picking up on our homeschool journey.
