Continuing our studies for Black History Month, this week we learned about Edmonia Lewis, a famous sculptor. We read aloud a quote from her
“Letter From L. Maria Child,” in the National Anti-Slavery Standard, 27 Febuarary 1864. “There is nothing so beautiful as the free forest. To catch a fish when you are hungry, cut the boughs of a tree, make a fire to roast it, and eat it in the open air, is the greatest of all luxuries. I would not stay a week pent up in cities, if it were not for my passion for art.” We read about life growing up, her education, travels, and studied her sculptures. She was the first internationally recognized sculptor of Afican American and Native American descent. Unfortunately much of her work was lost but we found pictures of a few pieces online. I used our art study techniques, studying pictures of each sculpture, then when I put it away, had the kids describe it to me. Poor Cupid and The Death of Cleopatra were among the favorites. We also watched a documentary called A Short History of the Moors. We learned and discussed the history of the people, their way of life and the beautiful architecture of their buildings. The Moors ruled in Grenada for almost 800 years and built a fortress palace called the Alhambra. Much of the buildings have survived and can still be visited today.

The weather is warming up and we’re looking forward to planning some field trips so stay tuned. I’ve had the kids make a list of all the things they want to learn about and we are going down the list, coming up with ideas for some hands on learning.
