Home-Schoolers Learn About Local Small Businesses

By Annette Walters February 11, 2021

This week we talked about what it would be like to run a small business. The kids deliberated about what type of business they’d like to run and what kinds of things they would need to consider. In order to better understand the topic, we made our way to a few businesses in town and asked them questions like why they chose that particular type of business and why that location.

Our first stop was to Black Cafe where we spoke to Trey Ware. He asked the kids lots of his own questions, getting their perspectives and discussed how much of the profit from his business went toward keeping it up. He picked the area because he loved it and enjoyed making food and coffee. We hung around for some beignets and enjoyed the environment.

Next, we visited Wendy Dorfman at Sugarwolf Outdoor Exchange. Wendy discussed how opening a consignment outdoor store was bringing two of her passions together: hiking/camping and bettering the environment. The equipment she sells is good quality used camping and outdoor gear which might have otherwise ended up in a landfill. We made sure to pick up some homemade fire-starters for our next camping trip while we were there.

Our last excursion was to the Handy Stop where we spoke to Bradley Cruice. He gave the kids a complete tour of his grocery/convenience store and told them how, for him, running a grocery was a family business. He walked them outside and explained how having it located on a corner made it more visible and created more business for him. The kids got to see how some of the equipment worked and even helped check out a customer. Mr. Cruice explained that providing healthy food options in an area where it was otherwise scarce was important to him. Many of his customers live or work in the area. We stocked up on lunch foods and tea time treats while there and made a big meal of it once we got home. This was probably one of our favorite and most informative field trips yet. We would have visited a lot more businesses if we’d had time, but plan to ask questions next time we find ourselves at a local business.

About Annette:

I’m a homeschool mom of two, ages 11 and 5. We’ve been homeschooling from the beginning for 6 years and our preferred method is unschooling with a Charlotte Mason twist. I love homeschooling for the freedom it gives us and because I enjoy learning alongside my kids. Our favorite ways to indulge our interests are by exploring the world around us, doing experiments and activities, talking to people who are passionate about their fields, and reading well written books. I believe so much in what we do, I’ve kept it through divorce and now working full time from home. It’s my hope to continue our journey until college or whatever next step my kids choose to take.
