Home-School Field Trips and Educational Lesson Ideas

By Annette Walters October 29, 2020

We hosted a cupcake decorating class with local cake decorator Amy of Mimosa Sweets. The kids learned to roll out, cut, and paint fondant to make Pikachu cupcakes. They came so cute and we almost didn’t want to eat them but they tasted even better than they looked. Amy can be contacted through Facebook page here https://www.facebook.com/mimosasweets337/?ref=page_internal.

Schoolhouse Safari came to our book club recently and the kids were able to interact with tortoises and turtles. We’d read The Soldier and the Tortoise about a WWI vet who adopted a tortoise while fighting in the war. It was the perfect activity to coincide with the book and the kids learned a lot about the different species of tortoises and the difference between tortoises and turtles. Schoolhouse Safari has several options for making an event educational. We’re hoping to schedule a field trip soon to learn about all their animals.

Our homeschool community has three book clubs. Nichole Wilson hosts the elementary book club and the group link is https://www.facebook.com/groups/336309690111281. The kids read a picture book and meet to do activities related to the book. This month’s theme is story time pumpkins and the kids painted pumpkins from a favorite story book to show off at their meeting. Other meetings have included crafts, author meet and greet, and reading with a therapy dog. I host middle school book club and assign books based on the interests of the kids. When we meet, I align an experience to enhance what we learned from the book. Besides the tortoise experience, we’ve Zoom called with an astrophysicist and made paper mache dragon eggs. Future meetings will include decoding runes and building a 3D puzzle. The group link is https://www.facebook.com/groups/1724199633413. Lori Babineaux hosts our high school book club. The kids choose a book and meet for discussion and often have activities according to the book’s them. They’ve had a murder mystery party, a roaring 20s party and even had visits with the authors. Future events include reading Little Women and having a holiday party. Her group link is https://www.facebook.com/groups/1570187916325649

About Annette:

I’m a homeschool mom of two, ages 11 and 5. We’ve been homeschooling from the beginning for 6 years and our preferred method is unschooling with a Charlotte Mason twist. I love homeschooling for the freedom it gives us and because I enjoy learning alongside my kids. Our favorite ways to indulge our interests are by exploring the world around us, doing experiments and activities, talking to people who are passionate about their fields, and reading well written books. I believe so much in what we do, I’ve kept it through divorce and now working full time from home. It’s my hope to continue our journey until college or whatever next step my kids choose to take.
