Stay Safe & Have A Plan: Hurricane Delta

By Jennifer Ercoli - Publisher Macaroni Kid Lafayette October 8, 2020

Thursday evenings at 8:30 pm has always been the time we send out our weekly e-newsletter full of local family fun. Being that a major hurricane is heading straight for us (or slightly to the west with us getting the dreaded east side of the storm) we all have other things to worry about and the stress is building up. Do I stay? Do I go? How do I prepare? I know, I am in the same boat! This week the articles are redundant but still awesome to check out if you have not yet done so. Their are giveaway opportunities and Halloween fun galore. As always, please do not hesitate to share. Our resource is FREE and the more we get the word out about local family fun the more families make lasting memories and that is our ultimate goal.

Now a few last minute notes on preparing for Hurricane Delta:

1. Fill the vehicles up with gas. Don't wait because you may have to wait in line 30 minutes or so if you do.

2. Charge up phones when bad weather is near, you never know when the electricity could go out and leave you without power to your cellular devices.

3. Fill up the pantry with items that don't have to be cooked in the microwave or oven- at least a 3-4 day supply.

4. Tie-down things with sandbags or pea gravel that may blow away; i.e. trampoline, basketball goals, outdoor furniture, wind chimes

5. Ice is good to have for deep freezers

6. Batteries for those household things that can be powered that way.

7. Candles in every room of the house that can be lit in a crunch...don't forget matches or lighters to light those candles

8. Flashlights, flashlights, flashlights- get each kid one so they feel safe and can navigate around a dark house

9. Fill bathtubs up with water in case your water is turned off and you need to flush the toilet.

10. Have charcoal or propane on hand for grilling food if needed

11. Stock up on water bottles

12. Extra ice chests

13. A digital thermometer to check the internal temps of food that you have to ensure it's safe to eat

14. First aid kit

15. Cash in case those ATMs are out of service or store card readers aren't up and running.

And talk with your spouse or partner and have a plan for all the just in-cases that may happen. It may ease the stress to know what you will do in each situation. Do not go outside during the storm, do not run generators inside or close to open windows and check on your neighbors after the storm. We are all in this together. Stay safe my Macaroni Parents!
