Music & Market Kicks Off with Lil Pookie & the Zydeco Sensations

August 29, 2019

Music & Market returns Friday, October 4th to Opelousas kicking off a four week fall season beginning with Lil Pookie & The Zydeco Sensations at the Farmers Market Pavilion.

The outdoor concert series, which began some 13 years ago, is designed to promote the area's music heritage while highlighting local farmers and their produce. Each week, in addition to a musical guest, a different produce item will be featured. The October 4th event will spotlight the vegetable, kale.

Lil Pookie’s unique style is the result of a lifetime of musical influences. His grandfather, the late Delton Broussard, was the forefront of Lil Pookie’s roots and was instrumental in his interest in playing the accordion.

Lil Pookie began his career in music playing the frottoir or rubboard as known to most outside of Southwest Louisiana. He gained experience and exposure through traveling with the popular band, Zydeco Force. Born in the small rural St. Landry Parish community of Frilot Cove, as a youth, Pookie spent much of his time learning to play music. He watched other musicians and sneaked into local dance clubs to gain knowledge of what was already instilled in him.

At the age of twelve, he won the first accordion contest at the popular Zydeco Extravaganza. He began to learn other instruments and became a drummer with the Zydeco Blazers, later moving on as the accordion player for the group.  As his style developed, a loyal following of fans began to grow and the group became a popular local hit in Louisiana & Texas.

Music & Market takes place from 5:30 – 8:30 p.m., with music beginning at 6:00 p.m. For more information, call 337-948-6263 or visit www.cityofopelousas.com.
