Governor John Bel Edwards signed the new child passenger safety law on June 1, 2019 that and it will go into effect on August 1, 2019. The changes are:
Age/Size | Restraint Use |
| Birth to at least 2-years-old | Rear-facing in an infant or convertible child safety seat |
| At least 2-years-old and has reached weight or height limits of the rear-facing seat | Forward-facing child safety seat with an internal harness |
| 4-years-old and has outgrown the forward- facing weight or height limits of restraint system | Restrained in a belt-positioning child booster seat, secured with a vehicle lap-shoulder seat belt |
| 9-years-old that has outgrown the booster seat and can pass the 5-step test | Ride restrained with a lap-shoulder adult belt secured correctly on the vehicle seat |
| Younger than 13-years-old | Rear seat of a vehicle when available in a proper restraint system, booster seat, or adult safety belt |
A child who because of age or weight can be placed in more than one category shall be placed in the more protective category.
