Lafayette is such an amazing place to not only live, but visit as well.  Many people are only familiar with the festivals and food that can be found on any given day or weekend.   Lafayette has many, many other people and places that should be known and visited by all travelers visiting, or passing through.

Lafayette is home to multiple, extremely talented, authors and illustrators.  The types of books vary from children’s books for a variety of ages, all the way to adult books ranging in many different categories.  I have yet to come across one that has not entertained my children and I.

What’s Watching Me?, written by Nancy Rust & Carol Stubbs, is a series of short stories about animals and their environment. Each chapter starts with a quote that gives the reader a glimpse into what is in the upcoming chapter.  This is a great book to use for bedtime, one story can be read each night!   “This is a series of short stories to keep children from being overwhelmed.”  For children who are interested in animals and their environment, this is a must read.  It includes many fun facts about animals that even I was interested in!  What’s Watching Me? is best suited for students grades 2-6, but can be enjoyed by all ages.

The Story of Tee-Blanc Sambeaux as Told by Auntie Amíe, written by Amy Ducote, took an old story, updated, and cajunized it using old Cajun phrases that are barely heard or used today.  This familiar story has both an English and French version in the same book. It even includes the definition of the French words if you are not familiar with them.  This is a great read for the whole family, whether you are from here or not.  If you are, there will be many places referenced that you may be familiar with.  This is a great book to read to your children to keep the Cajun culture alive.  “I love to read, and ended up with a family project with my aunt, dad, and myself!”  The Story of Tee-Blanc Sambeaux is a great read for all ages.I personally like to read my kids the French version.  It is a lot of fun, and we all enjoy it!

From A to Zoot , written by Margaret David Laborde and Rebecca Feeney Doherty, will be released in August.  Margaret and Rebecca first conceived the idea for their book in 2014, and their book has been under creation since that time.  In From A to Zoot, a lovable charactercalled a “zootsnoot” takes the reader on a journey through the Land of Zoot to meet his friends, each of whom represents a different letter of the alphabet and embodies a positive message or thought.  This book is whimsically illustrated by Paul Kalil Roach, Margaret’s nephew.   “Books are a powerful tool- a way to not only entertain but also to inspire, motivate, spark the imagination, and teach valuable life lessons,” says author Margaret. This book “inspires optimism, positivity, and self-confidence.”  This is a great read for all, especially grades 2-6.  Look for From A to Zoot out in August.

You can find these books at Lafayette’s Artisan Farmers Market every last Saturday of every month, Amazon, and Barnes & Nobles.
