Third Annual Bicycle Safety Festival

May 31, 2018

Lafayette Consolidated Government, in partnership with Bike Lafayette, Broussard & David, LLC and TRAIL, will host the third annual Bicycle Safety Festival on Saturday, June 2 at Parc Putnam in Downtown Lafayette from 9 a.m. until noon.

Bicyclists of all ages are invited to participate in the free event featuring bicycle safety instruction, bike helmet fitting, and bicycle inspections.

“The aim of this event is to help cyclists and motorists become more knowledgeable about bicycle safety and the rules of the road,” shared sponsor and organizer Blake David. “As Lafayette embraces a more bicycle-oriented mindset, bicycle awareness is becoming even more essential. Through this approach, we can make the roads safer for all users.”

The Festival organizers hope to make cycling in Lafayette safer for everyone by offering education and safety equipment to attendees. Free youth and adult, certified bicycle helmets will be given away to the first 300 participants, as well as free bike lights and tee shirts while supplies last. Festival-goers who complete a short bicycle safety course, led by trained volunteers, will be eligible to win a free bicycle valued at $300, courtesy of Hub City Cycles and Bike Lafayette.

This family-friendly event will also include fun activities like a family-friendly, guided bike ride organized by TRAIL (Transportation Recreation Alternatives in Louisiana), bike obstacle course for kids, complimentary food and refreshments, and musical entertainment by Acadiana School of the Arts students. More experienced bicycle enthusiasts can also join in on a free adult ride kicking off from Parc Putnam at 7:30 a.m. with distance options of 16, 26, 36 or 50 miles. The route will takes participants past Parish Brewery and down the scenic Bayou Tortue Road before finishing with a loop around the Acadiana Regional Airport. Adults interested in taking part in one of the distance free ride options should arrive at Parc Putnam by 7 a.m. For more information on TRAIL or any of these organized rides visit www.latrail.org/bsf2018.

Attendees who ride to the Festival or bring their bikes can register them for free with the Lafayette Police Department, compliments of Broussard & David, LLC. In the event a bicycle is lost or stolen, registration makes owner identification easier when the bike is found or recovered.

Thanks to the generous support of the Broussard & David law firm, there is absolutely no charge to attend and participate in any of the activities at the third annual Bicycle Safety Festival. In sponsoring this event, the partners at Broussard & David, LLC hope to reduce preventable accidents through education and road safety training for bicyclists, motorists and pedestrians alike.

The third annual Bicycle Safety Festival will be held in Downtown Lafayette at Parc Putnam, located at 815 Lafayette St., between Vermilion St. and Rue Bibliotheque and across from the Federal Courthouse. The event is scheduled for Saturday, June 2 with festivities kicking off at 9 a.m. and concluding by noon.
