Netflix Original Series - DreamWorks Spirit Riding Free Review

May 4, 2017

Macaroni Kid Lafayette was given the amazing opportunity to preview a new DreamWorks animated series.  The new series, Spirit Riding Free,  will be available to view beginning May 5th on Netflix. Prior to the show we had fun playing pin the tail on Spirit's cousin. It was a great way to get into the Spirit!

During our preview showing, we had 13 children who sat quietly and watched.  This is almost impossible to have happen at anytime, but Spirit Riding Free did just that. The show was able to capture the attention of 13 children between the ages of 4-10 by depicting a story of coming of age and friendship using a wild horse, Spirit, who teaches them what exactly it means to be free. After the show all of the children stated they wanted to see more episodes.

I believe the reason the show resonated so well with the children is because it touched on so many issues they face everyday. Children want to be included and are constantly trying to figure out how to fit in while still being their true selves. These are the issues that are explored in this new series.

Spirit Riding Free is a DreamWorks animated series that focuses on the relationship between three friends, one being a 12 year old gutsy girl named Lucky who befriends a wild mustang named Spirit. Together they encounter different adventures that push their own limits and tightly bond their friendship.  The show continuously defies stereotypes and and portrays positive images to young viewers. Spirit Riding Free is a children's show geared towards girls ages 4-9 but is truly "Family Friendly" and can be enjoyed by everyone! My children are looking forward to May 5th so they can watch more of the series.  May 5th will be Spirit night at my house!
