Just in time for Valentine’s Day, the Lafayette Parish Animal Control Center (LACC) is playing Cupid with two special events to match shelter pets for adoption into loving homes.
Feline Friday - Feb. 10, from 1 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. Adoption fees for kittens and cats will be reduced to $60, normally $80, and visitors will be treated to punch and refreshments.
Second Chance Saturday - Feb. 11, 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. This Saturday is a second chance for shelter animals to find their forever home! Saturdayadoptions also allow the adoptive owner and their new pet the rest of the weekend to get to know each other’s needs and schedules before resuming the regular work week. LACC will only be open for adoptions on Feb. 11, and animals will not be accepted for intake. Regular adoption hours are from 1 p.m. until 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Both events will be held at the shelter, located at 613 W. Pont Des Mouton Rd. in Lafayette.
Every adoptable animal from the shelter is neutered or spayed, vaccinated and microchipped, a value of $200-500. Regular adoption fees for dogs and puppies are $100 and $80 for cats and kittens. Cash, Visa, MasterCard and Discover payments are accepted at LACC.
For individuals interested in gifting a shelter pet as a Valentine’s Day gift, adoption gift certificates are the best option. Giving an LACC “Gift Fur-tificate” ensures that the recipient is ready to welcome their new pet and allows them to select a puppy, kitten, dog or cat of their choice. LACC adoption gift certificates are available for purchase at the shelter and cover costs associated with regular adoption, including spaying/neutering, vaccinations and microchips.
By offering extended and weekend hours, including evening hours on the fourth Tuesday of each month, LACC is working to make adoptions more convenient in order to reduce the euthanasia rate and ultimately become a no kill shelter.
Early in his administration, Lafayette Mayor-President Joel Robideaux partnered with Target Zero, a national nonprofit organization which works with community animal shelters, to transform LACC to a no kill shelter. Beyond extended adoption hours, LACC is implementing other best practices such as ramping up collaborations with local animal welfare groups to provide new avenues to rescue and adopt-out animals admitted to the shelter.
