Picnic & BBQ Season: 7 Secrets to Eating Right

June 12, 2014
If you’re trying to eat lighter, warm-weather food can present some challenges (think: chips, burgers, potatoes…). Try these smart strategies at your next barbecue or picnic:

DON’T GO HUNGRY

If your goal is not to overeat, one of the biggest mistakes you can make is to starve yourself all day so you can indulge later on. If you show up famished to a big meal, you’re more likely to pig out. Instead, stay satiated with a light snack beforehand.

GET MOVING

When you arrive, indulge in a fun activity such as volleyball, a sack race or tag. You’ll avoid mindless snacking and have a blast!

STAY HYDRATED

Drink a glass of water before you eat. (We often confuse thirst for hunger.) Avoid alcoholic beverages and sugary sodas.

Tip: Bored of H2O? Lipton® Herbal Tea in Orange Blossom Hibiscus makes a refreshing, caffeine-free iced tea.

LOAD UP ON VEGGIES

Warm weather brings an abundance of fresh produce. Fill at least half of your plate with healthy choices such as green salad, grilled vegetables and crudités.

CHOOSE YOUR MEAT WISELY

Forego the steak and ribs and opt for grilled fish or skinless chicken. If you choose a burger, pick turkey or lean ground beef.

BE SMART ABOUT THE BUN

If you must have a bun with your hot dog or burger, go for a 100% whole- wheat version to boost your fiber intake.

WATCH THE TOPPINGS

Sauces and dressings can be high in fat and calories, so top off your food with moderation. Try dressing your burger or hot dog with chopped onions, lettuce and tomato.

Tip:
Hellmann’s® Light Mayonnaise has half the calories and fat of Hellmann’s® Real Mayonnaise, so you don’t have to hold the mayo.

BRING DESSERT

Avoid the cakes and pies and bring a watermelon or a fruit salad.
