Healthy Kids Running Series Is Back in Lafayette This Spring

March 11, 2026

If you’re looking for a fun, active way to keep your kids moving this spring, the Healthy Kids Running Series is returning to Lafayette with a five-week program designed to help children build confidence, stay active, and have fun.

The Healthy Kids Running Series (HKRS) is a national, community-based nonprofit founded in 2009 with the goal of introducing kids to the sport of running in a supportive and encouraging environment. The program focuses on helping children develop a positive relationship with physical activity while celebrating personal achievement—no matter their pace.

Locally, the Lafayette series has been running since 2018, offering both fall and spring seasons for families in the community. Each season features five weekly races, giving kids the chance to build endurance, track their progress, and experience the excitement of race day alongside friends and family.

What Makes Healthy Kids Running Series Unique

Unlike a traditional race, HKRS is structured as a five-week series, allowing kids to return each week, improve their skills, and celebrate their growth. The program is designed for children ages 2–14, with race distances tailored by age group so every child can participate comfortably.

Running divisions include:

  • Pre-K (2–3 years): 50-yard dash
  • Pre-K (4–5 years): 75-yard dash
  • Kindergarten–1st Grade: ¼ mile
  • 2nd–3rd Grade: ½ mile
  • 4th–8th Grade: 1 mile

There is also a Challenger Division, which provides an adaptive race option for children with disabilities, helping ensure the program remains inclusive and welcoming for all kids.

The Lafayette series will take place at Girard Park, one of the city’s favorite spots for outdoor family fun.

Supporting Healthy Kids in the Community

The Lafayette series is coordinated locally and has also made an impact beyond race day. Over the years, the program has donated funds to local schools to support physical education programs, helping teachers purchase new equipment for their students.

As a former PE teacher, the local coordinator understands how important it is to keep kids engaged and excited about movement—and how helpful those resources can be for educators working with limited budgets.

A Great First Race Experience

Healthy Kids Running Series isn’t just about competition—it’s about helping kids build confidence, celebrate effort, and develop healthy habits that can last a lifetime. Whether your child is an experienced runner or just getting started, the program offers a welcoming environment where every child can feel successful.
