Woodvale First Grader Headed to National Braille Challenge

May 22, 2025

Lafayette has a rising star to celebrate! Emerson, a talented and determined first-grade student at Woodvale Elementary, is heading to Los Angeles this summer to compete in the 2025 National Braille Challenge. He earned his spot at the national level after winning the statewide competition in March—an incredible achievement for someone so young.

The Braille Challenge is the only academic competition of its kind in the country, designed to promote and celebrate braille literacy for visually impaired students in grades 1 through 12. Participants are tested in a range of essential skills including Reading Comprehension, Spelling, Speed and Accuracy, Proofreading, and interpreting Charts and Graphs.

Despite being one of the youngest participants in the competition, Emerson is eager to show the world what he can do. He’s especially excited about the opportunity to “be famous.”

Emerson’s accomplishment is a proud moment not just for Woodvale Elementary, but for the entire Lafayette community. We’ll be cheering him on as he represents our state on the national stage this summer. Way to go, Emerson—you’re an inspiration!
