Hilliard Art Museum hosts Chinese Winter Festival Play Day

Event includes both in person and virtual events

December 9, 2021

Beginning Dec. 18, the Hilliard Art Museum launches its live and virtual Winter Play Day celebrating the Chinese Winter Festival. In-person activities will be held at the museum from 10 a.m. through noon Dec. 18. Virtual activities will be available online at HilliardMuseum.org through Spring 2022. Play Day events at the museum are free and open to the public.

"Play Day is one of my favorite programs at the museum because it gives families a chance to make and experience art together,” said LouAnne Greenwald, director of the Hilliard Art Museum. “During COVID, Play Day has become an online experience with video demonstrations and downloadable activities that families can enjoy throughout the holiday season."

This season’s Play Day theme corresponds with a current exhibition by Chinese artist Master Shen-Long titled Universe of the Mind: Master Shen-Long. The Winter Festival, or Dongzhi Festival, is a traditional celebration of winter’s arrival. Families celebrate by cooking special foods like dumplings and rice balls, making lanterns, or going ice skating.

The museum, in partnership with Lafayette Parish Magnet Chinese Immersion Program, Mandarin Immersion Ambassadors of Acadiana, Lafayette Public Library, and the Lafayette Chinese American Association, has created videos and activities for families to enjoy this holiday season. The Chinese Students and Scholars Association University of Louisiana at Lafayette is also a community partner. Visit hilliardmuseum.org to access the content.

The museum is grateful to International Paper Co., the event sponsor, for their support.
