Parish Proud and Moncus Park Team Up to Plant 100 Trees

March 30, 2023

Parish Proud, Moncus Park, and the University of Louisiana Lafayette volunteers are teaming up to plant 100 new trees at the Park. The project aims to improve local wildlife habitats and mitigate runoff and greenhouse gas emissions.

This conservation project is made possible by a generous grant from Parish Proud on behalf of the Apache Tree Corporation, a national program focused on large-scale conservation, protection of habitats for wildlife and native species, as well as the restoration and enhancement of public greenspaces.

Of the 100 donated trees, 75 River Birch, Live Oak, and Red Oak trees will be added to enhance the woodland buffer zone in the back 50 acres of the property, and 25 Cypress Trees will be planted on the island located in four-acre Lake Reaux at Moncus Park. The addition of these 100 trees totals 800 trees planted on-site since 2018 and adds to the more than 6,000 trees already thriving on the property.

“One the of key components of placemaking is to enhance a community’s sense of pride and ownership,” said Chuck LaGrange, executive director of Parish Proud. “Projects like this one fosters that connectivity of community through a shared appreciation of environmental preservation and stewardship.”

Alongside the Parish Proud and Moncus Park team, trees will be planted by more than two dozen University of Louisiana at Lafayette students as part of the University's First Year Experience, "The Big Event," which allows students to volunteer in their community in their own way. Through various service projects, students gain a sense of citizenship and social responsibility, all while promoting a Ragin' Cajun spirit.
