It’s Gumbo Weather! at the Lafayette Public Library

September is Library Card Sign-up Month!

September 1, 2022

September is Library Card Sign-up Month! Each September, the Lafayette Public Library joins the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries nationwide to remind students, parents, and caregivers that signing up for a library card is the first step on the path to academic achievement and lifelong learning.

It is also a time when the Library issues its limited-edition library card featuring a Louisiana artist. The Lafayette Public Library is extremely excited that the 2022 limited-edition card features artwork by local artist Hannah Gumbo of our state bird – the pelican. The new card will be available at all library locations starting Tuesday, September 6, while supplies last.

When asked about her inspiration for the library art card, Hannah Gumbo replied, “Inspiration is never in short supply, so I drew up a few different sketches. The tough part is narrowing down ideas until you are left with your best one. I love the image of books in flight swirling in the sky much like the ideas they create swirl around in my mind. I enjoy drawing animals and this art seemed like the perfect pick for a library in the ‘Pelican State’.”

Since 1987, Library Card Sign-up Month has been held each September to mark the beginning of the school year. ALA has selected Tony Award-winning performer, actress, singer-songwriter, and philanthropist Idina Menzel and her sister author and educator Cara Mentzel to serve as honorary chairs of the program in 2022. As honorary chairs, Idina and Cara will remind everyone that one of the best places to find your voice is at the library. And during Library Card Sign-Up Month, they want you to explore all the library has to offer, like new children’s books, access to technology, and educational programming.

The Library has teamed up for the fifth year with the Lafayette Parish School System to provide your child with a free Student ID-Public Library Card. This program automatically enrolls more than 32,000 Lafayette Parish public school students into the library system. Students can turn to their public library for materials, online services and databases, and knowledgeable library staff who support academic achievement. At the Lafayette Public Library, students can find a wide variety of educational resources including Homework Louisiana, LearningExpress Library, Adventure Kits, and so much more!
