“On voyage dans le temps à Vermilionville: It takes a village”

Summer Camp at Vermilionville

April 23, 2015

For a summer camp that is not only fun and educational but also culturally enriching, send your young ones to Vermilionville’s “On voyage dans le temps à Vermilionville: It takes a village” summer camp! While your children are with us for a week, they will learn about all the different things that make Acadiana so unique, focusing on the three main cultures native to our area (the Acadians, Creoles and Native Americans) through crafts and other activities specific to their age group and skill-level. Additionally, the first three camp sessions (June 22-26 for ages 5-6, July 6-10 for ages 7-9 and July 13-17 for ages 10-12) incorporate French language vocabulary, and the last session (July 20-24) is an all-ages French immersion week (campers must either speak French fluently or have completed at least 1 year of French immersion schooling to attend this session).

Each day, campers will partake in hands-on projects that they will get to take home with them at the end of the week, such as fishing poles, seedling packs, bousillage sculptures and more. They will also record their activities over the week in their own hand-made journal. On the first two days, they’ll learn about the Earth, plants, the bayou and our natural resources – our gardener and chef will teach the campers about everything from planting their own food to preparing their own meals. The following three days will be spent with our artisans and musicians who will be teaching them about the local traditional folkways and history. The week concludes with a show-off day for parents and siblings.

Cost for one week of camp is $200, and your spot can be held with a $100 deposit. This fee covers all materials associated with hands-on crafts as well as food (we will provide your camper with a small breakfast in the morning, lunch, and snacks throughout the day). Camp times are from 8:30am to 4:00pm. Registration opens to the public May 1st.
