National Children's Dental Health Month

February

January 29, 2015

February is the observance of National Children’s Dental Health Month, placing emphasis on parents and caregivers to take early action ensuring good health of their children’s teeth and gums.

Dr. Carl Gonsoulin, Pediatric Dentist, reminds Acadiana that tooth decay is the most common chronic disease found in children. Fortunately, practicing good dental habits can prevent dental disease.

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends the first dental check- up just after the first tooth comes into the mouth which is around 6 to 9 months of age. Taking care of children’s teeth from the very start is the key to good dental health. All children should see a dentist on or before their first birthday so that they become familiar with the dentist and so that their parents can learn how to prevent cavities early on. Regular check-ups every 6 months are recommended so that any problems may be detected, treated early, or even avoided completely. Tooth decay if left untreated can cause pain and infections that may lead to problems with eating, speaking, playing, and learning. “Good dental health improves a child’s general health and self-esteem, prevents chronic health problems, and reduces school absenteeism rates resulting in higher academic achievement”, explains Dr. Gonsoulin.

Dr. Gonsoulin has been treating children and adolescents in his dental office at 126 Hospital Drive in Lafayette for over 30 years. He and his staff provide dental services including cleanings, oral exams, fluoride treatments, restorations, and sealants along with proper oral hygiene instruction to their patients and parents.
