Opelousas, LA — To our Acadian ancestors “DIY” was more than just a weekend Pinterest project. Handmade items like clothing, bonnets, and blankets were made out of necessity. They were created with care and done by hand, which took hours, weeks, and months of their time. Hear these stories and more in the newly released film, Coton jaune - Acadian Brown Cotton - A Cajun Love Story. Film makers, Sharon Donnan and Suzanne Breaux, will offer a free showing of the film and Q&A at the St. Landry Parish Visitor Center on October 3, at 1pm.
In addition to the film, the center is hosting an exhibit themed, Women Crafting Our Culture, throughout the entire month of October. Handmade items, reminiscent of what women would have made in the early days of Acadiana will be on display, along with the state bicentennial quilt. Visitors can expect to see examples of quilting, tatting, sewing, spinning, weaving and more. Creole folklorist, Rebecca Henry; avid collector, Clara Darbonne; and spinner/weaver, Charlene Quinilty are providing these items from their personal collections. These locals have dedicated their lives to preserving the culture that thrives here in Southwest, Louisiana through education and storytelling. So bring your mother, daughter, sister, or even just a friend, and help continue to pass down the legacy of strong Acadian women.
These events are in conjunction with the Grand Réveil Acadien, a festival-style event happening in South Louisiana from October 3-12. Grand Réveil Acadien translates to Great Acadian Awakening, which is meant to encourage everyone to celebrate their Cajun culture. You don’t have to be of Acadian ancestry to join the party. Everyone is invited toattend, and to learn more about this incredibly unique culture through individual events taking place throughout South Louisiana.
